• Increase exposure for participating groups,
• Inspire groups to achieve new heights of artistry and creativity through a healthy, respectful, lively, yet playful competition.

HOW TO ENTER
1. REGISTER. Complete this initial application ASAP.

2. SUBMIT VIDEO APPLICATON. Provide access to a new or recent existing video of your group to the host. This access is best provided by uploading a private video to YouTube or DropBox and sending the link. You can also send any additional information if you wish. Deadline is MAY 19, 2017 at midnight.

3. ACCEPT. We’ll evaluate your materials and email you back by May 26, 2017 to let you know if your group is invited to participate. If so, please accept (or decline) by the date provided in the invitation.
WHO MAY ENTER
Any group of any style or composition may enter this contest. Group size from 3 to 18. The entertainment proposition is of the greatest importance. Performers may not compete in more than one group.
In the interest of expanding the breadth of music presented, groups from area Barbershop Harmony Society and Sweet Adeline International choruses are not eligible to compete in this year’s Acappellooza 2017. However, if individual members belong to other (non-barbershop) a cappella groups, they may compete.
WHO MAY CONDUCT
Most competitors do not have a conductor. However, any group may have a director conduct from on, or off-stage, if they desire. However groups who choose to do so should be aware that many judges view conductors as negatively impacting a group’s performance
Groups shall perform for 8-10 minutes.
Timing shall begin with the first deliberate sung or spoken utterance, choreography or blowing of a pitch and shall run continuously through applause and performance until the last deliberate sung or spoken utterance, choreography or blowing of a pitch.
Groups may use their time to perform as many or as few songs as they wish.
Groups shall not be penalized for ending on time or under time. Groups may be penalized, or even completely disqualified from winning, for going over their allotted time, at the discretion of the judges.
Groups are advised to plan time for brief applause after each song.
All competing groups will receive the order of performances and approximate time schedule on site on the day of performance.
Judging shall be accomplished by a panel of qualified judges with appropriate training and experience in a cappella music.
Each judge shall rate each group in terms of its musicality, originality and overall impact.
The members of the audience shall also each be offered the opportunity to vote for a winner and whoever the majority of them shall choose shall receive one vote which shall be counted equally to the vote of one of the expert judges.
Repertoire and choreography should be appropriate for family audiences. Failure to adhere to this rule may result in penalty or disqualification, at the discretion of the judges.
All performances must be completely a cappella and no instruments or percussion of any kind are permitted, with the exception of pitch pipes or similar devices used solely to generate starting pitches, and vocal percussion. No set pieces are allowed on the stage.

Upon arrival, groups will supply the judges and host with set lists indicating:
1) Title of the pieces
5) Vocal Percussionists
6) Whether the piece is an original song or arrangement
7) Contact information including email and phone
Groups shall also provide a short introduction for the Emcee/host to use. Five (5) groups will be invited to perform at Acappellooza 2017. For each group, a different and interesting introduction is desired. Please make your introduction short, sweet and specific. The Emcee may edit your submission as needed.
Judges will keep notes in order to provide feedback to participants. If time allows, judges may give immediate feedback publicly to the contestants. If not, they will provide feedback in writing and/or in person backstage. Judging will occur in two phases.
Phase 1: After all groups have performed, each judge will rank the groups in order of preference. First place receives 5 points; second place receives 4 points, etc. Each audience members will have the opportunity to cast a single vote via smart phone. The audience favorite receives 5 points; second place receives 4 points, etc. The aggregated scores (from judges and the audience vote) will be used to choose the top three groups.
Phase 2: The top three groups will return to the stage for one additional song (2-5 minutes in length), which will be scored by judges, but not the audience. After each performance, judges will provide live, public feedback to the performers. The judges are encouraged to be constructive in their comments to the participants; however, they are also encouraged to be direct, honest and entertaining. After the top three groups have performed, each judge will rank the groups in order of preference. First place receives 3 points; second place receives 2 points; and third receives 1 point. These scores will be added to the Phase 1 scores to determine the final ranking of the top three groups, which will be announced immediately and cash prizes awarded.
Up to 18 wireless microphones are typically available at the competition. We also have area mics. Groups may perform on mic or off mic at their discretion.
Requests regarding mixing and effects made to the sound engineer will be honored where possible, including the request to enhance bass, vocal percussion, leads or to “use your best judgment”. In the absence of any contrary instructions, the engineer will be instructed to provide microphone responses of approximately equal volume and NOT to do any mixing which would affect the balance of parts during the show.
A sound check is not absolutely guaranteed. If a sound check is provided, all groups shall have approximately the same amount of time to sound check.
At the discretion of the host, groups may sell merchandise immediately following the concert. Please notify the host if your group wishes to sell merchandise. Acappellooza 2017 does not sell merchandise for groups so groups must provide all necessary manpower, security and supervision required to sell their merchandise.
By performing and competing, and by accepting the benefits of publicity derived from appearing in the event, which all parties agree is of value, and by accepting any awards, if any, all participants agree to abide by these rules and that the host has the following rights in addition to any others which it may have:
Sound of the Rockies may use the name, story, recorded performance and likeness of any group or any of its members or directors or other supporting persons to promote a cappella generally, to promote a cappella or charity events, or to promote any of our programs or materials without any payment to group or members.
Sound of the Rockies may record in analog or digital video, photograph, audio or by any other means, the group and/or its members and support persons for archival, promotional or distribution purposes, whether digital or analog.
All participants agree to hold Sound of the Rockies harmless and indemnify them from any and all claims which may arise in connection with their participation in Acappellooza 2017, including but not limited to personal injury, intentional infliction of emotional distress, copyright infringement, trademark infringement, slander and libel.
