WHO MAY ENTER
Any group of any style or composition may enter this contest. Groups may include three to 18 singers. Performers may not compete in more than one group.
In the interest of expanding the breadth of music presented, groups from area Barbershop Harmony Society and Sweet Adeline International choruses are not eligible to compete in this year’s Acappellooza. However, if individual members belong to other (non-barbershop) a cappella groups, they may compete.
Groups shall perform for no more than 10 minutes. Time will start with the first deliberate sung or spoken utterance, choreography or blowing of a pitch, and shall run continuously through applause and performance until the last deliberate sung or spoken utterance, choreography or blowing of a pitch.
All competing groups will receive the order of performances and approximate time schedule on site on the day of performance.
A panel of celebrity judges will judge the event. Each judge will rate the group in its musicality, originality and overall impact. Members of the audience will text their vote at the end of the first phase of judging. Repertoire and choreograph should be appropriate for family audiences. All performances must be completely a cappella with no instruments.
Groups will provide a short introduction for the emcee/host to use. Four (4) groups will be invited to perform at Acappellooza 2019. For each group, a different and interesting introduction is desired. Please make your introduction short, sweet and specific. The emcee may edit your submission as needed.
Phase 1: After all groups have performed, each judge will rank the groups in order of preference. First place receives 4 points; second place, 3 points, etc. Each audience member will have the opportunity to cast a single vote via smart phone. The audience favorite receives 4 points; second place receives 3 points, etc. The aggregated scores (from judges and the audience vote) will be used to choose the top two groups.
Phase 2: The top two groups will return to the stage after intermission. First place receives 2 points; second place receives 1 point. These scores will be added to the Phase 1 scores to determine the final ranking of all the groups. The announcements of placement and cash prizes will follow.
Up to 18 wireless microphones are typically available at the competition. We also have area mics. Groups may perform on mic or off mic at their discretion.
Requests regarding mixing and effects made to the sound engineer will be honored where possible, including the request to enhance bass, vocal percussion, leads or to “use your best judgment.” In the absence of any contrary instructions, the engineer will be instructed to provide microphone responses of approximately equal volume and NOT to do any mixing which would affect the balance of parts during the show.
A sound check is not absolutely guaranteed. If a sound check is provided, all groups shall have approximately the same amount of time to sound check.
At the discretion of the host, groups may sell merchandise immediately following the concert. Please notify the host if your group wishes to sell merchandise. Acappellooza 2019 does not sell merchandise for groups so groups must provide all necessary manpower, security and supervision required to sell their merchandise.
By performing and competing, and by accepting the benefits of publicity derived from appearing in the event, and by accepting any awards, all participants agree that the host has the following rights:
