It’s September, and Sound of the Rockies’ 2019-20 season preparations are in full swing. Long before the chorus takes to the Newman Center stage at the University of Denver for its annual holiday show in December, members are devoting countless rehearsal hours for the world-class production, with all the bells and whistles, that Sound of the Rockies is known for.

Musical Director Mark Hale promises that it will be a year to remember, with new elements and some surprises, but also a commitment to making long-standing fan favorites sound better than ever.

“We are very fortunate to enter 2019-2020 with an extremely strong ensemble that combines the expertise and experience of our veterans with a lot of fresh, new talent,” Mark said. Sound of the Rockies placed sixth in the world at the International Barbershop Harmony Society competition in July, with 13 recently added members and has been busy auditioning more prospective singers since.

“We are starting the year off with an incredible energy and brightness to our sound, something we look forward to sharing with our audiences,” he said.

But there’s a lot on tap over the next months before showtime including weekly rehearsals, and appearances throughout the Rocky Mountain region.

First up, SOR is competing at the Rocky Mountain District Barbershop Harmony Society Convention, September 27 – 28 in Cheyenne, WY. This is the qualifying event for next summer’s International Barbershop Harmony Society competition. In October, the chorus is scheduled to perform at the Montana Music Educators Association conference in Billings, MT.

And, that’s just the beginning.

“Our year is jam-packed,” Mark explained. In all, the chorus will learn about a dozen new songs, rehearse at least 20 tunes from its repertoire and prepare a selection of songs specifically for competition. At the same time, members will be perfecting their choreography and stage direction while working on solo and quartet features.

“There’s going to be a lot of burning the candle at both ends,” he said. “But the guys wouldn’t have it any other way. It sustains us and makes us the best we can be for our audiences.”
